How I deal with nerves, in photography and in life.
When I talk about pre-shoot jitters, do I mean my clients’ nerves? While I absolutely understand that there’s nerves aplenty for anyone getting their photo taken, I’m actually talking about MY nerves! Why do I get nervous before every shoot?
Some people are natural leaders. We all know them, and you might even be one. Their place is out front, and they are the person we thank our lucky stars for when we’re part of a rudderless group of people trying to accomplish a task. Guys, I am not that person! Add to that the fact that I fully appreciate just how important photos are and that their importance will only grow as our lives change. Time passes, and so do people, and the magnitude of what photos will mean to my clients in the future is not lost on me.
Getting out of our comfort zone is a necessary part of growing as a person. I know of no other way to discover that what we thought was our weakness often becomes our strength. This has been one of the greatest gifts photography has given me. I’ve been forced to push past the limits I’ve put on myself and have found that my unique way of directing people is the best possible fit for anyone nervous about photos. I’ve learned how to direct without being abrupt or intimidating. I understand a quieter spirit because I am one!
I am a podcast junky, and I heard someone say something that has stuck with me. (If you heard it too and can remember where, leave a comment and let me know!) I am nervous because what I am doing is important. Would I rather sit on my couch all day, avoiding nerves but doing nothing that really mattered? Nerves are my brain’s way of saying, “This matters!” And isn’t using my life to do something of lasting value to others the point of living? I truly wouldn’t trade it for anything. So repeat after me the next time you’re trying something new – THIS IS IMPORTANT! YAY!
